RISK OF SEROTONIN TOXICITY WITH THE COMBINATION OF INTRAVENOUS METHYLENE BLUE AND SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

INTRODUCTION

Methylene blue (MB) injection is frequently used as a visualizing agent for parathyroidectomies and as a treatment for rare yet life-threatening conditions [e.g., methemoglobinemia, cyanide poisoning, ifosfamideinduced encephalopathy and vasoplegic syndrome (severe arterial hypotension with low systemic resistance)].1-4 Within the last decade, case reports have described central nervous system (CNS) toxicities with the use of this agent, prompting researchers to investigate this potential reaction.
